Wisdom Learning From A Hyrax

What on earth is a hyrax and what does it have to do with my recovery? Unless we live in Africa or the Middle East we probably have never heard about these squat furry animals about the size of a rabbit. Hyraxes are one of four animal species mentioned in the book of Proverbs in the Bible. They are mentioned in this book of wisdom because they are wise, and we can learn from them.
Four things on earth are small. But they are very wise. The second are hyraxes, which aren’t very powerful. But they make their home among the rocks. (Proverbs 30:24a, 26 NIRV)
Hyraxes do not have much means with which to defend themselves and so they settle down with up to 80 others in safe places high in the rocks, not easily accessible to predators.
When you see trouble coming, don’t be stupid and walk right into it— be smart and hide. (Proverbs 22:3 CEV)
What is the lesson for us from the hyrax? We should not expose ourselves to danger and risk. We need to be on guard and identify those people and situations that are triggers to our using and steer a wide course around them. We need to: surround ourselves with lots of healthy people; attend meetings and actually fellowship with others; keep lots of phone numbers handy and use them.
Let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us encourage one another with words of hope. Let us do this even more as you see Christ’s return approaching. (Hebrews 10:25 NIRV)
Most of all, we need to run to the Lord who is our rock of refuge. Steps 10 and 11 help us maintain our sobriety by enhancing our relationship with God. We need to be wise by settling our hearts in God’s presence and quickly admitting anything that goes wrong.
But the Lord is my place of safety, high on the mountain. God, my Rock, is my safe place! (Psalm 94:22 ERV)
Prayer: Thank you God for little creatures like hyraxes who have great wisdom. Help me to be wise and make any necessary changes, so I am always safe and secure in Your care. Amen
