We started lying a long time ago to cover up and hide from the truth. Now we find it almost impossible to tell the complete truth in any situation. We often want to run and hide from others rather than tell them the whole truth about what is going on inside us. However, the road to recovery which God offers us is based on truth telling and integrity. What are we going to do?
We all know we’ve been dishonest at times but, are we willing to admit to ourselves the truth about why we lied? Some of our core beliefs are lies that we used to prop up our sin and addiction. For those of us who have cycled in and out of recovery, it’s almost certain we have been living under the power of deception and require God’s help to recognize and live in the truth. Perhaps it’s time to start acknowledging the underlying lies that our beliefs are based on. To leave them untouched will impact our recovery and contribute to future relapse.
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” (John 8:31b-32 NIV, John 16:13 NLT)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I confess that I have found it more self-serving to act on my own faulty beliefs rather than be guided by the truth of Your word. I’ve lied to myself and to others. Today, I confess that I’ve been wrong. I turn away from telling lies and ask You to forgive me. Please work in me and change me so that telling the truth, regardless of any consequences, becomes my way of life. Amen
