When we first come into a recovery meeting and someone is asked to share their experience, strength, and hope with the group, we are often skeptical in our thoughts about what the person is saying. We are just at the beginning of recovery and not even sure we can abstain from our dependency for one day never mind living the experience of sobriety and looking forward with hope to the future.
Trapped and helpless, I struggled against the ropes that drew me on to death. In my distress I screamed to the Lord for his help. And he heard me from heaven; my cry reached his ears. (Psalm 18:5-6 TLB)
God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19 NIV)
Each day God will strengthen us to do what He is calling us to do. Our part is to learn what the Scriptures say and then conform our ways to God’s ways. We will triumph over our doubts and fears, and hope will grow in us, when we faithfully follow the way God directs our path. Any stumbling block will be removed as we seek God and pray for the knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)
Prayer: Gracious God, I ask You to be my rock, and my fortress, my strength, and my deliverer. I need Your help every hour to strengthen my belief that a Power greater than myself will restore me to sanity. Amen
