Treasure

What are we thinking about every day?  What are we longing for?  What do we think we need in order to be happy?  Jesus tells us to consider what we treasure most because:  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.  (Matthew 6:21 NLT)

For too long the sole object of our desire has been our drug of choice.  In recovery, lots of us think that a particular relationship, a good job, and more money are what we need for life to go well for us.  Many have stumbled out of recovery over fretting about these and other types of worldly treasures.

The first thing God wants us to know and understand is that the foundation of a settled and satisfying life is coming to experience the truth that we are God's special treasure.

For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.  (Deuteronomy 7:6 NLT)

When we truly believe this, we will have come to know the Higher Power who will restore us to sanity and, in that moment of clarity, turn our will and life over to His care.  As we walk with God and treasure what He treasures, we will find great joy and delight in our daily living.

Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight.  (Proverbs 2:3-4, Psalm 119:111 NLT)

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, Help me to live in the reality that I am special – I am Your special treasure.  Help me not to be anxious about anything but to attach my heart and mind to this truth.  Help me to walk in Your paths of righteousness and seek understanding like hidden treasure.  Help me to follow Your principles in all my affairs so that each day I can know the joy and delight of life with You in recovery. Amen
