Stay Alert

Sunday September 4, 2022

When we have completed the twelve steps of our recovery program, we are just at the beginning of our new way of life. Each day we are moving forward as we put into effect the principles we have learned. At times though, our former lifestyle may begin to look appealing in the light of the effort required to overcome our fleshly desires. The Scriptures tell us we need to be aware of the devil’s schemes and bring the tempter’s assaults before God in prayer, requesting His guidance and strength to stand firm on His Word.

Pray all the time. Ask God for anything in line with the Holy Spirit’s wishes. Plead with him, reminding him of your needs, and keep praying earnestly for all Christians everywhere.
(Ephesians 6:18 TLB)

The devil and his demonic forces want anyone they have controlled back under their power. We need to be alert to their accusations about our past and refuse the guilt and shame that may arise over our former wrongdoing. We need to remind ourselves that we have repented of our sins and have been forgiven by God, therefore, there cannot be condemnation for what no longer exists. The Scriptures tell us clearly:

Those who belong to Christ Jesus are no longer under God’s judgment. (Roman’s 8:1 NIRV)

When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He used the Scriptures to counteract what was being said. The moment we begin to believe what the demons of darkness are saying, is the moment we stop believing what God says. We have a choice at this point. Whom will we believe? We have been “accepted in the ‘Beloved” (Ephesians 1:6b NKJV) by our Heavenly Father. Now we must proclaim the truth of who the Scriptures say we are.  This is our ammunition against the forces of darkness.

We have been set free because of what Christ has done. Because he bled and died our sins have been forgiven. We have been set free because God’s grace is so rich. (Ephesians 1:7 NIRV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise You that Your Word as recorded in the Bible is truth and that it will never change. Help me stay alert to the accusations of the wicked one and to stand firm on the truth that I am accepted in the beloved one and truly am a child of God.
